The permanent split capacitor motor is a simple,
reliable design, because it has no
starting switch nor a starting capacitor. A
run type capacitor is connected in series
with the start winding. The design
allows for use with speed controllers, as well
as instant reversing operations. The
schematic shown is for a single speed motor,
but multiple speed designs are common.
There are some drawbacks to the motor design.
Low starting torque, sometimes as low
as 30% of running torque limits its use to easy
to start applications. PSC motors are
found on gate operators, garage doors,
fans and blowers, and applications where instant
reverse is required.
