This special design of motor is more common than
you think. You can find it on machine
tool coolant pumps, woodshop equipment
manufactured in Europe, and ski grinding
machines. The motors are typically IEC
frame and manufactured in Europe or China.
The motor has low starting torque and running
torque. It is actually a 3 phase winding,
as shown, with a capacitor continually connected
in one winding phase, which acts as a
phase shifting, phase converter.
Recognizing these motors is sometimes difficult
without disassembling them. They do have
a telltale signature however, which is that
the capacitor is a run capacitor. This
may not always help, since the capacitors
often are unmarked.
